Unemployment Hits a Four-Year Low and How this Impacts Employment in the Information Technology Job Market  

Based on Labor Department figures, the U.S. job market is showing extremely promising stability with applications for unemployment insurance payments dropping by 14,000 to a 4-year low of 351,000 for the period ended March 10, 2012. 

“There’s a steady, sustained improvement in the labor market.  As more people have jobs, confidence is picking up.  This is consistent with pretty solid gains in consumer spending”, said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Pierpont Securities LLC in Stamford, Connecticut, who was ranked by Bloomberg as the most-accurate forecaster of personal spending over the two years through February 2012, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Consumer confidence has a direct correlation to employers feeling comfortable with searching for new software resources and delving into the world of cloud computing and mobile apps.  The result is an increasingly rapid demand for Information Technology (IT) employees.  Positive employment projections from the Labor Department coupled with expected increases in salary, explain why employment in the technology market is booming with no foreseeable end.

In an article entitled, “The Best Jobs of 2012”, US News finds five of the top ten jobs to be from the IT sector.  Not only is the list based on employment projection data provided by the Labor Department, it is carefully ranked based on current and future employment rates, salary and job satisfaction.  Perhaps the most impressive and persuasive reason for the ranking is salaries.  It is estimated that, while salaries in the United States stand to see an increase of 3.4 percent, jobs within the technology market can expect to see the largest increase at 4.5 percent.  With figures like this, it should come as no surprise that employees of all shapes and sizes are finding themselves touching up their resumes in hopes of earning a little piece of the pie.

In the New York Times article “Top 10 List: Where the Jobs Are”, Network Systems and Data Communications Analyst position came in at number 2.  “A background in computer science is not necessary”, the article claims, “These are very teachable skills”.
